This Sunday, March 20th is the holiday of Purim! Much time has been spent in Hebrew school discussing the meaning and significance of the holiday. Therefore we strongly encourage you to join us at our annual Purim Celebration geared to our Hebrew school families this Sunday at 4 p.m- There are no regular classes in the morning.

Hamentashen Recipe

Ingredients:
4 eggs
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup oil
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon lemon rind
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
5 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder

FILLINGS:
1 lb. poppy seed filling
or 1 lb. Jelly

YIELDS: 4 dozen hamantashen

Preheat oven to 350º.

Grease cookie sheets.

Beat eggs and sugar. Add remaining ingredients, and mix well. Divide into four parts.

On a floured board roll out each portion to about 1/8 inch thick. Using a round cookie cutter cut 3 inch circles.

Place 1/2 teaspoon of filling in the middle of each circle. ( Diagram 1 )

To shape into triangle, lift up right and left sides, leaving the bottom down, and bring both sides to meet at the center above the filling. ( Diagram 2 )

Bring top flap down to the center to meet the two sides. Pinch edges together.

Place on greased cookie sheets 1 inch apart and bake in a 350º oven for 20 minutes.

Hamantashen, 'Haman pockets', are eaten on the Jewish holiday of Purim. This holiday celebrates the salvation of the Jewish people, in the year 356 BCE, from Haman's plot to annihilate all the Jews, in a single day.

While the sage Mordechai rallied the Jews to prayer and repentance, his cousin, Queen Esther, engineered Haman's downfall at a private wine party to which she invited him and the king. She prevailed upon King Achashveirosh to hang Haman and to issue a decree, empowering the Jews to defend themselves against those who sought to destroy them.

On the thirteenth day of the Jewish month of Adar, the day originally slated by Haman for murdering the Jewish nation, the great battle was fought. The Jews defended themselves against their enemies and were victorious. They celebrated on the following day, the fourteenth of Adar. This day was instituted as the Purim holiday on the Jewish calendar.

A time honored Purim custom is for children to dress up and disguise themselves, an allusion to the fact that the miracle of Purim was disguised in natural garments. This is also the significance behind the Hamantash, a pastry whose filling is hidden within its crust. The Hamantash has a three cornered shape to remember Haman, who wore a three cornered hat.

A popular filling for the Hamantashen is poppy seed. The seeds are in remembrance of Queen Esther, who ate seeds and vegetables, in her efforts to keep kosher while living in the king's palace.

It was so great to be back at Chabad Hebrew School for another terrific year ahead! We welcome all our new students and hope they have an easy transition here at Chabad. The students from grades 3-6 enjoyed an Aleph Champ carnival with many exciting booths revising what they had covered last year in addition to very informative lessons on the upcoming holiday of Yom Kippur!
They also concluded Hebrew School with a grand High Holiday game of "Find Your Match"
The K's and First graders were all excited as they began learning the Hebrew Aleph Bet and the Second Graders were introduced to the exciting Aleph Champ program and learnt lots about Yom Kippur and the meaning of this special day!

This year we have introduced a new Tefillah- Prayer service run by Rabbi Benjy for grades 3 through 7. The Children each received a child-friendly siddur and followed along with an audio of the prayers. Rabbi Benjy explained what each prayer means and handed out raffle tickets to all our terrific daveners.

PESACH AT CHABAD HEBREW SCHOOL!

k-1st grade.

What fun we had learning about the festival of Pesach.We explored many different themes and the children really got a feel for what went on during the time of slavery in Egypt. We now know what slavery really means and how much the Jews suffered under Pharoah's rule. We made our very own Pesach suitcases and filled them with special Pesach objects like a drinking cup for the four cups of wine representing freedom, a mini ten plagues book, some matzah and more.We also discussed the difference between chametz and matzah and the different foods that we are and aren't allowed to eat on Pesach. We can't wait for Pesach to come already!!

2nd grade.
now that we're in Grade two, we're old enough to learn much more history about Pesach. We enjoyed discovering the different items on the seder plate and the reasoning for each one. How proud we are to show all our parents our special Pesach Haggadah's with all the 15 different steps to the Seder. We hope to keep them real well so we can add more pages to it each year. We have also spent time learning two stanza's to the mah nishtana and the famous dayeinu song and can't wait to sing it outloud at the Seder.

3rd grade.
We took Pesach to a whole new level this year! would you ever imagine how we could apply the story of Pesach to our very own lives? Well we discussed and brainstormed together and then began to realize how matza represents being humble- as it does not rise and chametz represents arrogance. The King Pharaoh within us wants us just to think of ourselves and not to be worried about others- that’s Chometz, arrogance, bragging, just being concerned about yourself.Matzah is being humble, not constantly talking about yourself, and thinking of yourself, rather helping other people and looking out for othersIt was amazing to see a real connection with the story and our daily lives. Hopefully we will be able to experience true freedom this Pesach!

4th and 5th grade!
How interesting it was to see that the concepts of chametz (arrogrance- bc it rises) and matza(humility bc it doesn't rise) is demonstrated in the hebrew letters that make up each of the words. Chometz and Matzah have the same letters with one exceptionMatzah has a heyChametz a chet The chet has 3 walls, nothing can enter. It represents selfishness, when you worried about no one but yourself. You are only concerned with yourselfThe Hey has a space, it make rooms for others. It does kindness and good deeds for others. We also went through the steps of the Seder and look forward to sharing the significance of each one at the Seder.

6th grade.
This year we reviewed all we have learnt in previous years and explored in greater depth-- the idea of ridding our homes of chametz, why we need to drink four cups of wine at the seder, why we need to re-live this story each year and the idea of specially made shmura matzah. We discussed methods of how to win over the Pharoah within each and everyone of us and how to experience true freedom!

SUNDAY NOVEMBER 22nd

The Hebrew School teachers put on a spectacular Chanukah play and now
we all know the story of how the Greeks tried to prevent the Jews
from serving G-d.
The Jews played with dreidels to distract the soldiers from catching them learning Torah.
The small Jewish army of Maccabees overcame the huge Greek army, and when they returned to the
Bait Hamikdash, there was only enough pure oil for one night.
A miracle happened and the oil lasted for eight entire days, until new,
pure oil was made.
We sang Chanukah songs together and are looking
forward to Chanukah wonderland coming up!

Our twins turned 3!!
It's time for their formal Jewish Education to begin!
Our little boys celebrated their upsherin (haircutting ceremony) and are now wearing their jewish uniforms of a Kippa and Tzizit.
Our little girls are begining to help the rest of the Jewish nation and bring more light into the world.
They will now light Shabbat candles every friday night!

Remember the story of the man who thought he was witnessing a murder
of a man lying helplessly, strapped to a table? What was the big
picture? The men surrounding him with sharp blades weren't trying to
kill him - quite the opposite! They were performing a life-saving
surgery on the ill man!
Hashgacha Pratis/Divine Providence is like us, humans, looking through
a small window and only seeing a tiny bit of the big picture - that,
only G-d can see. We need to remember that there is a bigger picture
than what we see, and we need to have faith that it is all good.

SECOND GRADE:
"Let my people go" Pharoah refused to let the Jewish people go, even after such terrible plagues.

Q: What was the tenth plague?

THIRD GRADE:
Just like firefighters, soldiers and policemen need their uniforms to help them to their job, we have the Jewish uniform to help us do mitzvot. let's wear our Jewish uniforms proudly!!

Q: What part of the Jewish uniform helps us remember that Hashem is above us, and always watching us?

FOURTH GRADE:
We learnt a very important mitzvah called Derech Eretz- being respectful. We must respect our elders and even our own friends and property.

FIFTH GRADE:
Moshe, the greatest superhero of all time. Despite his lisp, he successfully redeemed the Jewish people. His compassion and humility are key traits to being a successful leader. Keep that in mind the next time you need to stand up for your beliefs.

Q: If Adam was the first man, and Abraham the first jew...then what does that make Moshe?

SIXTH GRADE:
It was boy's week this week! We celebrated the brit-circumcision of our baby boy and then discussed the Pidyon Haben- redemption of the firstborn son that takes place 30 days after the baby is born. Ofcourse every Jewish celebration includes food and so did ours.

SEVENTH GRADE:

Seventh graders all know the blessing to make on foods they eat. We had a delicious Bracha relay race and games show. Now we are all Brachos pro's.

DAY #7 -We had so much fun dressing up at our hands on Shabbat party!
Q: What is the special Shabbat bread called?

SECOND GRADE:
We saw how branches turn into ashes quickly when lit with fire. The burning bush that Moshe saw did not burn- which is how he knew that Hashem was speaking to him.
Q: What were three signs that Hashem showed Moshe by the burning bush?

THIRD GRADE:
Charity/Tzedakah is not only about giving money to the poor, but also about helping someone in any way they may need. We learned all about the Mitzvah of Tzedaka and made our very own Tzedaka boxes to keep in our bedrooms.
Q: Besides from giving money to the poor, what is another example of the mitzvah of Tzedaka/charity?

FOURTH GRADE:
We learned how humans unlike animals have their brain above their heart and can think before they act.

Q: Why do we have the responsibilty of taking care of our environment as opposed to animals?

FIFTH GRADE:
Mazal Tov! This week we celebrated the marriage between special superheroes; Yaakov to Rochel and Leah. We even enjoyed a wedding feast-cake included!
Q: I am the grandson of the first Jew, a twin and married to 2 sisters. who am I?

SIXTH GRADE:
Our twins our growing nicely thank G-D! This week we learnt about the procedure of naming a Jewish girl. Rabbi Benjy led the service as we stood around the Bimah and each gave a Jewish name to our little girl. We discussed the importance of a Jewish name and how it is an essential connection with Hashem.
Q: Which days of the week can a baby girl be named by the Torah?

SEVENTH GRADE:
The Seventh grade KOSHER COOKING SHOW was lots of fun- while we baked chocolate chip cookies we checked all the eggs to ensure that they were Kosher. While blending milkshakes we determined what foods can be eaten with dairy meals and while baking mini Pizza's we learned which toppings are Kosher. Who knew Koshe could be so much fun??

SECOND GRADE:
We started the story of Exodus and learned about how the Jews were slaves in Egypt. Alef Champ was introduced and the children were so excited that they remembered the Alef-Bet from Last year.

THIRD GRADE:
As a Jewish nation we have our own flag and national anthem- The Mezuza and the Prayer of Shema. Let's show our Jewish pride!

FOURTH GRADE:
We learnt that just like every toy has a manual, our world has a manual- THE TORAH!let's learn it!
We also discussed that although no two candles are alike, each has a flame that is the same. We too may all be different from one another, but each of us has a Neshama (soul) that unites us.

SIXTH GRADE:
MAZEL TOV! MAZEL TOV! There was plenty of excitement in the 6th grade classroom as we all gave birth to twins. We celebrated their births- filled out birth certificates and discussed the concept of a Neshama-Soul that enters the childs body at birth. Looking forward to following the growth of our babies as we discover THE JEWISH LIFECYCLE!

SEVENTH GRADE:
Through a fun game of pictionary, we learned that we eat Kosher Food in order to be holy. We then created our very own Kosher Restaurant Menu's. We are excited to see who the winners will be and which Kosher dish will be created on our future Cooking Show!

Welcome to another great year at Chabad Hebrew School.
For all of our new students, we're delighted to have you join our Hebrew School family and for all those back with us again, we look forward to continue sharing many more fun classes and special events with you.

Our First day was so much fun. We were so busy learning about all the upcoming Jewish Festivals.
With Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot and Simchat Torah all fast approaching-we covered them all in fun and interactive ways. After blowing the shofar, tasting apples in honey, writing new year's wishes and shaking the lulav and etrog, we simply can't wait to celebrate the Festivals.

We are so excited to begin sharing our news, photos and class updates online with all our mums and dads.
